Our newest range of tableware at Daylesford feels particularly personal to me as it features a design that uses my handwriting. Called the Galley collection, the pieces are inspired by English delftware, a type of tin-glazed pottery originally known as ‘galleyware’. The white and blue pay homage to the craft’s heritage which borrows from the style of pottery made popular by Dutch makers from the city of Delft. Like the designs in our range, the English interpretations and designs are a little looser and have a painterly quality.

Every piece in the range is hand-painted, which means that its pattern has to be replicated by eye and makes each one unique. The skill of these artisans is extraordinary. If you look at the pieces closely, you might see that each one is slightly different, but only very subtly, and I think this makes them even more special. That knowledge that there is a story behind a piece, that it’s been handled and created by the work of a person’s hands gives the piece more meaning, it creates an emotional connection that I don’t think you get from something produced by a machine.

I’ve spoken before about how the heart symbol and word ‘love’ run through much of what we do at Daylesford and Bamford. It’s an important symbol for me because a desire to show care, compassion and love for others and for the earth fuels so much of what we do; you’ll find the symbols embroidered on scarves, imprinted in soaps and embedded in the architecture of our stores.

Sharing a meal with loved ones is a wonderful opportunity to show love, so I thought it would be fitting to create a plate that can remind us of the importance of this act.

You can purchase our Galley Love plate here. The image also features Indigo Plant Napkins and Indigo Dot Plate created by Nila House in Jaipur. All available online at daylesford.com and in our farmshops.
