Anyone who knows me will be familiar with my deep and longstanding love of geraniums and pelargoniums. I have a collection of over 110 different varieties in the glasshouse in my garden, each one unique, with notes ranging from rose and citrus to peppermint and lemon sherbet. The fragrance comes from the leaves of the plant – if you rub them between your fingers their essential oils release that distinctive green aroma. I find it grounding and incredibly nostalgic. The smell of home, nature, family – and Bamford’s signature scent.
But the inspiration for our founding fragrance is a story even older than Bamford itself. As a girl, I remember using a little green bottle of Floris’s Rose Geranium oil in the bath. Just a few drops and the smell would fill the whole house. It’s remarkable how scent can transport us to moments from our past.
This spring, I am delighted to be celebrating 20 years of Bamford’s geranium scent with the launch of our Glasshouse Collection – four delicately blended, handcrafted candles that bring the heritage of Bamford to life. I love that each one showcases a different pelargonium variety from my personal collection, starting with Graveolens which was created by the brilliant perfumer, Lyn Harris.
For me, this is the most timeless of all the pelargonium varieties and perfectly captures that first breath I take stepping into my glasshouse. It is a great source of the plant’s essential oil – known for its balancing, relaxing and naturally anti-inflammatory properties.

Next is Attar of Roses – a beautiful variety that reminds me of Turkish delight with its soft pink flowers and delicate, sweet rose scent. We’ll sometimes use the leaves to make a soothing herbal tea – or to flavour sorbets, cakes and syrups.
Mabel Grey is the strongest of all the lemon scented pelargoniums – making this candle a beautiful way to bring the freshness of nature into your home. I love how architectural this variety is too, growing tall and upright, with large, pointed leaves.
As the name suggests, pelargonium Tomentosum is easily identified by its soft, downy leaves. They have a powerful and cleansing peppermint scent, so I love to burn this candle in my kitchen – with peace of mind that our formula is 100% natural.
Provenance and craftsmanship are incredibly important to me. Each candle in our Glasshouse collection is sustainably made in England, using non-toxic wax, pure cotton wicks and handcrafted earthenware vessels, designed to be used again. It’s a conscious choice that connects you with nature – nurturing both your wellbeing and that of our precious planet.
