Chatsworth is one of Europe’s greatest private houses and somewhere that I love to visit, as much for the gardens as the house.
This September the gardens will be home to a new literary festival that celebrates the arts. Inspired by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s passion for art, The Chatsworth Festival – Art Out Loud is a literary festival dedicated exclusively to talks by those with a connection to the art world – as artists, collectors or writers. Speakers include Tim Marlow, Michael Craig-Martin, Jonathan Yeo, Charles Saumarez-Smith, Grayson Perry, Esther Freud and the Duke of Devonshire himself.
Coinciding with the festival is Beyond Limits – Sotheby’s annual exhibition of outdoor sculpture, which has been held in the historic grounds and gardens of Chatsworth for the last ten years.
This year’s show is entitled The Landscape Of British Sculpture 1950-2015 and includes monumental works by modern masters and contemporary pioneers of British sculpture, from Dame Barbara Hepworth and Lynn Chadwick to Sir Anthony Caro and Sarah Lucas. It is always a fantastic show and a wonderful way to explore the hidden corners of Chatsworth’s grounds.
The Chatsworth Festival runs from Friday 18th – Sunday 20th September. For full details visit www.chatsworth.org
